The Society has a variety of technical committees supporting academic investigation and research on NDT. Technical papers and reviews appear in "Journal of JSNDI," the official monthly journal of JSNDI. The Research and Technical Development Center was established for the purpose of strengthening academic investigation and research functions, and an academic database.
There are four Research and Technical committees: Radiographic Testing (RT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), Surface Methods, and Stress and Strain Analysis. Each holds meetings for the presentation of research papers twice a year and an open type symposium once a year. Each also has several specialized sub-committees. These committees also support the Society with standardization and certification activities.
| Research and Technical commiittees | Number of Subcommittees | Number of members (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Radiographic Testing (RT) | 3 | 220 |
| Ultrasonic Testing (UT) | 4 | 420 |
| Surface Methods | 9 | 280 |
| Stress and Strain Analysis | 3 | 150 |
The committees work across the four divisions of Research & Technical Committees to carry out research on integrated themes as demanded by the Society. The Ad Hoc Research & Technical Committees are handling the following six themes. Committee meetings are held three times annually.
| Ad Hoc Research & Technical Committees | Number of members (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Maintenance | 50 |
| Image processing | 30 |
| Acoustic emission | 70 |
| NDE of new materials | 30 |
| Reinforced concrete | 90 |
| Thermography | 40 |
The groups exchange information of particular topical issues to promote technical development and common understanding for a limited time of two years. The following three groups are active as of April 1, 2008. Each group holds two to five meetings a year.
| Ad Hoc Research & Technical Groups | Number of members (approx.) |
|---|---|
| Utilization of electronic fields information | 30 |
| Laser -ultrasonics and its related technologies | 50 |
| Nonlinearity-oriented nondestructive evaluation | 30 |
Annual Conferences: Conferences focus on all sectors of nondestructive inspection, testing, and evaluation techniques, and are held twice a year, in spring in Tokyo, and in fall in another selected area of Japan.
Symposiums: Symposium, which focus on specific technical themes, are held on a regular basis every year. The following symposiums are active now.
| Symposiums | Number of participants (approx.) |
|---|---|
| NDE of Radiographic Testing | 70 |
| NDE of Ultrasonic Testing | 100 |
| Non-destructive Surface Testing | 70 |
| Stress-strain Measurment and Strength Evaluation | 100 |
| Acoustic Emission | 70 |
| NDE of New Materials | 30 |
| Maintenance | 100 |
| NDT of Concrete Structure | 300 |
The Society sponsors an International Acoustic Emission Symposium (IAES) every two years, and co-sponsors the US-Japan Symposiums on Advances in NDT which were held in Hawaii in 1996, 1999 and 2005. It also cooperates with ICNDT, APCNDT as a member society.
